Opened as an RAF airfield in 1932, initially as a training station. Continued after the war as part of Transport Command and in the 1980s as a training base. Although RAF Abingdon officially closed in 1992, some military flying continues in connection with nearby RAF Benson and air cadet training. Usually one of the first shows of the season, held on the first Bank Holiday in May, the Abingdon Air and Country Show, also known as Abingdon Fayre, is part of a festival of vintage and classic vehicles, steam, ground amusements and military and civilian static aircraft, with a fly-in and about 3 to 4 hours very varied flying in the afternoon. Getting there Where is it? Abingdon is in Oxfordshire, north-west of Abingdon town and about 4 or 5 miles south of Oxford. By car Follow signs north from A415, not far from the junction with the A34, signposted for the event or for Dalton Barracks. For sat nav use post code OX13 6JG By coach National Express have coach services to Oxford, about 4 miles from the airfield. Take a local bus or taxi from there. You can book seats online. Click the National Express name to go to their web site. By Train There is no railway station in Abingdon but the Oxford to Didcot line runs nearby. The easiest place to aim for is Oxford, about an hour by train from London, and about 4 miles by taxi from Abingdon airfield. The variety of rail tickets and fares can be very confusing. The Trainline and Raileasy web sites list all ticket and fare options for the time and day of travel you choose. Click either the Trainline or Raileasy name to go to one of the those web sites. See the calendar for the next show date. Biggin Hill Biggin Hill was a famous fighter station, which played a major role in the Battle of Britain and, despite repeated attacks, remained operational throughout. On November 2nd, 1939, a squadron from Biggin Hill shot down the first enemy aircraft of WW2, a Dornier Do17. Shows at Biggin Hill are organised by Air Displays International, who are based at the airfield. Shows typically include a good mix of historic and modern military aircraft as well as aerobatic and formation displays. The Red Arrows, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and a good showing of WW2 aircraft are regulars. There are also usually good static displays with plenty of aircraft, 'dad's army', veteran and vintage cars, trade and craft stalls and fairground rides. Because of the history of the airfield, there is often a Battle of Britain thread. Getting there by car Biggin Hill is on the A233 in Kent, quite close to Bromley. From most directions, take the M25 and exit at junction 4. Don't try junctions 5 or 6, even from the west, because of congestion on nearby roads. The show is well signposted and there are usually several routes into the airfield to split up the traffic queues. Traffic news is provided by the airshow radio - the frequency is signposted as you get close. Public Transport The nearest station is Hayes, about 4 miles away. There are bus connections from Bromley South, East Croydon and West Croydon stations. This free four-day airshow is seeking to steal Eastbourne Airbourne's crown as the biggest free airshow in the UK. Like Airbourne, it is held from Thursday to Sunday along the seafront and offers sea-based events and static displays as well as military, historic and aerobatic air displays. Bournemouth's sea front is seven miles long. The air displays can be seen from most points, including the balconies of sea front hotels, but the best viewing is from the centre of the flying line, between Bournemouth and Boscombe piers. The festival influences all sorts of other local events, such as exhibitions, talks, and town centre displays, which take on an aviation theme. Getting there by car Post Code (for sat nav) BH2 5AA will get you to Bournemouth pier. Public Transport Bournemouth is served by SouthWest trains to London and to towns in Hampshire and Dorset; Virgin trains to the north, sometimes direct and sometimes via London or Coventry and by Southern's West Coastway service to Sussex towns via Southampton. National Express provide coach services to London, the major airports and to many towns along the south coast. It was originally an emergency airfield and sometime home to B25s, Mustangs, Spitfires and other WWII craft. Following the war, the airfield was a repatriation centre which handled over 47,500 prisoners of war and also played a part in the Berlin airlift in 1948/9. The airfield was involved in the development of the Harrier, Hawk, Hunter and other aircraft when it was owned by Hawker Aircraft Company Ltd (now part of BAE systems). The aerodrome is currently a private unlicensed airfield, part of an industrial estate and home to 'Top Gear'. Dunsfold holds an annual 'Wings and Wheels' show on the Sunday of the August Bank Holiday weekend. The 'wings' part includes a fly-in of vintage craft to a static aircraft park and air displays totaling about 4 hours. There are usually a mixture of civilian and military aircraft, including with a good variety of WWII and modern types. The 'wheels' element includes runway demonstrations of historic and modern supercars, bikes and military vehicles. There are also trade and wings and wheels related stalls, rides and amusements. Getting there Where is it? Dunsfold Aerodrome is in Surrey, about half way between Horsham and Guildford, to the west of Cranleigh, just off the the A281. By car Pick up the A281 from the A23, A24 or A29. The show ground is well signposted from the A281. Postcode (for Sat Nav) GU6 8TB By coach National Express have coach services to Guildford and Horsham but the local bus service, run by Arriva, does not run on Bank Holidays (show day is Bank Holiday Sunday) so getting fro the coach stop to the ground will probably require a taxi. You can book coach seats online. Click the National Express name to go to their web site. By Train There is no station at or within walking distance of Dunsfold. However, the London to Portsmouth line serves several stations nearby. The best to try are Guildford (10 mils) and Godalming (6 mils). The local bus service to the village does not run on the day of the show (or on any Sunday or Bank Holiday), so a taxi is the only realistic option from the station to the aerodrome. The variety of rail tickets and fares can be very confusing. The Trainline and Raileasy web sites list all ticket and fare options for the time and day of travel you choose. As well as contemporary Nato aircraft, there are usually displays by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, light aircraft aerobatics and helicopters, often including an enactment of Search and Rescue, troop landings and/or casualty or vehicle recovery. Eastbourne has a very long seafront. The aircraft can been seen from the Sovereign Harbour at the eastern extreme through to Beachy Head on the west. The flying line is more or less between the pier and the foot of Beachy Head, centred on an area called 'Western Lawns'. This is also where the events arena is. Look out for the Martello Tower (called the 'Wish Tower') which is on the edge of the Lawns. There are many excellent and unobstructed viewing areas in the centre of the flying line on the promenade in front of the Western Lawns and on the beach. This is a free show (an unsuccessful charging experiment in 2008 is not being repeated in 2009). The arena is in the middle of the flying line so the major spectacles, including the airshow flying highlights, parachute landings and arena displays, can all be viewed from the almost same place - unlike some coastal venues where the flying highlights and arena events are some distance apart so you have to dash or choose between them. The arena itself is also the focus for family entertainment and is surrounded by the usual static military displays, trade stalls and amusements. Non-air highlights include evening concerts in a bandstand along the promenade and a firework finale, preceded by a sunset fly past. Eating is a breeze as well, with hotels and other eating places all along the road that runs parallel to the promenade and other roads off it. The airfield is situated between the south downs and The Solent, well clear of controlled airspace, and now provides flying lessons and a base for private aircraft as well as events with a flying element. The two main flying days are both wings and wheels type events. Goodwood Revival, usually in mid September, has a focus on F1, GT and saloon cars and motor cycles of the 50s and 60s, often driven by past champions, reviving the days when the Goodwood Motor Circuit was one of the primary circuits in the UK. The air displays usually include a good range of historic aircraft and there are pre-1966 aircraft on static display. Goodwood Festival Of Speed is usually in early July and allows a wider range of aircraft including modern types, again against the background of motor racing. For just under a decade from 1883 it was an American airbase but all military flying stopped in 1993. Since 2001 Kemble has been a civilian airfield. The Bristol Aero Collection Museum and the Hunters of the Delta jets fleet are based here. Kemble's first show of the year is usually in a vintage aircraft show, held in May. Mainly a fly-in, there are plenty of vintage craft on display and probably a shortish flying display. The main annual show is usually held on Father's day. There is generally a mixture of classic jets and RAF displays as well as some airshow regulars. Traditionally a one day show, it went to two days in 2009. Later in the year, typically mid September, a smaller show is part airfield open day and part flying display. The open day part gives the opportunity to see the organisations based at the airport including Ultimate High as well as the Delta Jets. There is generally a relatively small flying display, usually vintage craft based at the airfield and a few visitors. Getting there By car Kemble is in Gloustershire, near Kemble village, on the A429, about 4 miles south-west of Cirencester. Entry is signposted via the Jackaments Bottom Lane entrance off the A433 Cirencester to Tetbury road, not via the main airport gate. Postcode (for sat nav) is GL7 6BA By train There is a First Great Western railway station at Kemble between Swindon and Gloucester. There is usually an enactment of some kind, such as a mock air attack followed by a mass scramble and pursuit. Although not the most recent show, this review is of the 2005 show which is typical of airshows at Biggin Hill. See the links box for other show reviews. As well as the usual side stalls, the 2005 show included a classic car exhibition with a parade along the crowd line each day, a fun fair and even a circus with free performances. There was also the normal static aircraft display, with a varied if not plentiful selection of vintage and modern examples, and a Chinook HC2 from Odiham that visitors could clamber inside. Being Biggin, the airshow itself was first class, with the usual selection of classic, wartime and modern craft to satisfy every taste. Those in the crowd who needed practice with their cameras will have appreciated the gentle pace of Saturday's display openers. Fieseler Storch First were the RAF Falcons, who, like other displays, were limited to just over 2,000ft by air traffic control because of the proximity of Biggin to the London air routes. Only slightly faster than the falling Falcons was the Fieseler Storch, Andy Evans performing alone in the absence of the billed Lysander. Following last minute cancellations, representation from abroad was limited to a Spitfire from Holland and 'Acromach', the Turkish-owned Pitts S-2S Special 'Purple Violet', flown by Ali Ozturk. Ali's Pitts frequently disappeared into its own smoke trail, winning the battle of the smoke-generators even against Will Curtis, amazing as ever in his Honda Dream Team Sukhoi Su-26. Very environmentally friendly smoke we were assured. Matadors Matching these solo aerobatics, the Red Bull Matadors provided a thrilling duo display in their pair of Sukhoi Su-26s, winning the prize for the best team display. Chinook The winner of the prize for the best solo display was the Chinook HC2 from No18(B) squadron, RAF Odiham. The Chinook clearly impressed the judges with an awesome performance including a very steep bow to the crowds and reverse take-off. Other rotaries included the Blue Eagles, who prefaced their performance with a repeat of last year's much applauded massed formation with the Army Air Corps Historic Flight. Well, most of them. The Skeeter was still not there and the Scout was missing because its pilot was busy getting married. Nevertheless, the 10 craft formation made an impressive sight. Rotaries that did not appear were the Black Cats. One of them suffered an engine fire and a heavy landing on Friday. Thankfully the Saturday and Sunday performances were the only casualties. Other no-shows at Biggin this year included the Breitling Jet Team, the Gold Air Pitts Special Aerobatic Team and the Shuttleworth Collection's Westland Lysander, which could not fly because of a technical problem with one of the engines. This was particularly unfortunate as the excellent show programme had devoted several pages to an article that featured the craft. There were also reduced displays from the Utterly Butterlys, who displayed as a pair on Saturday but only a managed a solo performance on Sunday, and the RN Sea Harrier, also a Saturday-only performer. The Hercules was reduced for operational reasons from a full tactical demo to its standard post-Falcons flypast and relegated from a flying display to a static were a pair of French Dassault Mirage F1s. Typhoon Reds ready to leave for Italy The French may not have managed to display their Mirage, but the RAF did us proud with a virtually full compliment, from the Tucano and Hawk trainers, through to the stunning Eurofighter Typhoon T1, in its first full display season. Parky, alias Flt Lt Antony Parkinson, talked through the manoeuvres being performed by Sqn Ldr Matt Elliot. The display was so tight that the Typhoon was rarely out of sight, the crowd having plenty of opportunity to study this impressive addition to the European arsenal from every angle. Of the other contributions from the RAF, which included the ever-popular Harrier GR-7and the Tornado F3, the most poignant was probably the Jaguar GR3A. The type is in its last season before becoming redundant to the Typhoon and the particular aircraft was on its last sortie before being scrapped the following Monday, having exhausted its quota of flying hours. Sea Vixen Also from the RAF, the Red Arrows were as impressive as ever on Saturday, after which they left for European dates starting at Rivolto in Italy. The Royal Navy provided a Sea Harrier on Saturday, although technical problems prevented a repeat on Sunday. On the other hand, their Historic Flight managed both days, the Sea Fury and Sea Hawk returning almost exactly a year after taking to the skies following their long absence for maintenance. The maritime theme extended to Plane Sailing's Catalina, now painted as a US Emergency Rescue amphibian: rather smarter than last year's garish yellow, and the unmistakable spectacle of the Red Bull Sea Vixen. B-17 'Sally B' P-51D Mustangs British-based warbirds of USA origin were very well represented. B-17 'Sally B' has had a lean season because of the new European insurance rules, but thanks to sponsorship from Richard Branson, Biggin was one of a few dates she did manage this year. Sally B was escorted initially by brace of P-51 Mustangs - Old Flying Machine Company's P-51D 'Ferocious Frankie' and Rob Davies' 'Big Beautiful Doll', which also flew their own tight duo without Sally. Other British based American warbirds were the P-47D Thunderbolt, the F8F Bearcat, and a pair from Golden Apple, the F-86A Sabre and the T-33A Silver Star. Delta Jets' Hunter taking off from Biggin The skies were also filled with British classic jets. Delta Jets' trio, a pair of Hunter T7s and a Folland Gnat T1, displayed in the colours of former RAF display teams, the Gnat in yellow and the Hunters in blue and black. DHL have been all over the place this show year and they didn't miss Biggin. Their colourful 757 banked and soared in a way that you don't often see from a commercial freighter at close quarters. Fox Glider On Sunday Guy Westgate performed unpowered aerobatics in his Fox Glider and even made an upside-down pass whilst on tow. All time favourites, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, displayed both days. Teamed up with the Spitfire and Hurricane was the DC-3 Dakota, although you can't help thinking the crowd would really have preferred the Lanc. These Battle of Britain favourites were in good company with Peter Vacher's Hurricane and five other spitfires - more details on the Scramble page in the Features section. Ray Hanna in Spitfire MH434 The show closed both days with an emotive display by Ray Hanna in Spitfire MH434. Sometimes clinging to the ground, sometimes soaring and swooping, there were audible gasps from the crowd when he reappeared from behind trees. As ever, an energetic yet graceful display of aerial dexterity from the master of the Spitfire. For Wings and Wheels 2009 the met office promised cloud and sunny intervals. They were half right. There was certainly plenty of cloud. However, unlike last year, the sun stayed hidden so it was rather gloomy all day. This didn't prevent near- continuous action in the air and on the track, throughout the day and beyond the scheduled display finish time. Bleriot replica fired up B25 fires up close to the crowds Dunsfold is an intimate show, with fly-ins before the show and a full programme on August Bank Holiday Sunday. The schedule includes classic and military vehicle and bike runs, plenty of trade and amusement stands, a static aircraft display area and about four hours of flying, all within a small and friendly former world-war II airfield, also well known as the location of the BBC Top Gear studio and test track. Stars of the static area were the B25, especially when it fired up for display, and the Bleriot replica, which had a rare engine run. There is an emphasis on vintage aircraft at Dunsfold, but a splattering, too, of jet offerings, including this year the Red Arrows, The Typhoon and the Vulcan. Avro Vulcan. Bomb doors open The star of the show had to be the Vulcan. It kept us waiting a while as Brendan O'Brien in the commentary box built up the tension describing its progress and counting down its appearance. Despite the cloud, she did not disappoint, dancing with such agility through the murky skies. As we waited for its appearance I heard a family man standing nearby say that he wondered why people had been so bothered about an old aircraft and why people had spent so much to get it airborne. Then it arrived. "Now I get it", he said. Eleven Red Arrows arrive from Poland The Arrows arrived direct from a display in Poland. A formation of eleven Arrows flew along the runway before breaking for landing. Later, Red 11 took off with the nine for the display and flew on to base. The display itself was necessarily restricted, both by the low platform caused by proximity to Gatwick and the cloud. It was also the last display of the day. By this time it was getting rather darkish and a bit chilly and many from the crowds had already decided to leave, presumably to avoid the inevitable long exit queues. Also restricted by the cloud base were the four Tigers, who opened the air part of the day. They jumped from just 2,000 feet but still managed a vertical tandem pair and a landing on the spot. Impressive! Matadors Blades Other team aerobatic displays were provided by the Guinot Wingwalker pair, the Blades and the Matadors. The Blades displayed their usual ex-Red Arrow talents in their four Extra 300LP craft but response from the crowds indicated that the Matadors would have won the team aerobatic prize had there been one. The pair danced their aerial ballet undeterred by the the murky conditions, their Sukhoi Su-26M2 craft in phenomenally tight formation. Eurofighter Typhoon The Eurofighter was well able to make the most of the grey backdrop to the day. It's near-sky coloured body was fair camouflage but its afterburners were hard to disguise as it roared athletically to woo the crowds. Sopwith triplane Junkers CL1 Older aircraft were excellently represented by no fewer than 9 replica WWI craft, including Fokker and Sopwith triplanes, four SE5a's, a Junkers CL1, Fokker DR1 and Nieuport. After a mock battle in which the German aircraft seemed to come off worse (funny that) they displayed briefly in small groups and landed individually, some at a second attempt in the gusty conditions. WWII fighters displaying were The Old Flying Machine Company's "Ferocious Frankie" P51D Mustang and MkIX Spitfire, and the unique Mk11B Hurricane Bomber. The Hurri bomber went solo but the Spitfire and Mustang offered pair as well as brief individual performances. The rather larger North American B25 Mitchell, from the RNAF Historic Flight, attracted the crowds in the static aircraft display area when firing up, as well as during its sortie. Hurricane bomber Mustang and Spitfire At the end of the day a hardy few remained to witness visiting aircraft, including some of the display craft, departing the static aircraft display area, taking off from different parts of the runway. North American AT-6 (Harvard) departs from the static park Wings and Wheels is a 'must visit', not only for enthusiasts, but also for local families seeking an excellent day out. And as a bonus the profits benefit the air ambulance and local charities as well. Put Wings and Wheels, August Bank Holiday Monday, in your diary now! It seems that no-one bore a grudge for the charging debacle that had kept so many visitors away the previous year. Thankfully, attention could turn to the air and ground displays. The Blades Unusually for Airbourne, there was no reenactment of an air-sea rescue or beach landing this year. Otherwise, the flying programme has settled into something of a routine. A heavy RAF presence, including the progression of Grob Tutor, Hawk, Typhoon, BBMF and Red Arrows; a parachute display; the Stearman wingwalkers; a prop aerobatic team - the Blades again this year - and a splattering of extras. Red 7 missing on Saturday In apparently deliberate competition with new boy on the block and seaside rival, Bournemouth, Airbourne booked the Red Arrows all four days of the show, with an arena appearance to distribute literature and sign autographs. The Arrows performed four different routines on the four days. Yes, we know there are normally only three basic varieties, the full, the rolling and the flat. But on Saturday, a fourth variation arrived by chance when Red 7 was unable to join the other eight because of a mechanical problem with the plane. The absence of Red 7 on Saturday was well covered in some formations, but you couldn't help noticing the missing Number 7 during the opposition passes, which became rather pointless single-plane flypasts. The best day for cloud cover was on Thursday, when the Arrows managed the full display. On Friday cloud forced a rolling display and after Saturday's eight-ship variation, lower cloud meant a flat display for their show-opening earlier display on Sunday. Pity. The cloud soon cleared so a later display would have left more options. Tigers Parachute display team on Sunday More photos of Airbourne 2009 Sgt Rich Cross, the RAF Falcon parachutist who was very seriously injured during a drop it Airbourne 2007, came to the arena at the end of a bike ride to raise cash for those who helped him. Since the accident, the RAF Falcons have not jumped at Airbourne. This year's parachute display was provided by the Tigers who landed - as last year - in the sea just off the beach. Impressive though the RAF Falcons are, the Tigers offered something different, with a variety each day of vertical and side-by-side tandem drops, culminating in a 4 man stack on Sunday. RNAF F16 spiral There was a Dutch connection to two of the popular attractions. A third, the programmed AB412 rescue helicopter was a no-show. The double-seat Mk IX Spitfire trainer has shed the Irish Air Corps livery it wore until 2007 in favour of Royal Netherlands Air Force colours and was flown superbly by John Romain. The BBMF Spitfire display was fine, but John managed to show the wartime favourite to its athletic best, keeping centre stage throughout the gripping display. For thrill value, there was a phenomenal display by Captain Ralph 'Sheik' Aarts of the the bright orange RNAF F16 complete with a new upward then downward vertical spiral with one smoke canister on, making a double corkscrew in the sky. A bonus on all four days was an appearance by the RNAF Spitfire and F16 together, following the Spitfire display and leading to the display of the F16 and on Sunday, the P51 Mustang joined in. As usual for Airbourne, WWII warbirds were well represented. As well as the Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and John Romain's display of the Spitfire trainer, we were treated to Peter Teichman's Hurricane MkIIB fighter-bomber or 'Hurri-bomber', "Jumpin' Jacques" P51D Mustang, and at the weekend an F-86 Sabre and T-6 Texan. The Swift Glider Team included Airbourne along with Shoreham and Bournemouth in their shows this year. Billed as 'glider and powered aerobatics' it didn't appear to draw or rivet the crowds. Of course, the glider could not detach because there is no-where convenient to land (what would have happened if the cord broke, as at Dunsfold?), so it is a towed glider, twisting on its tow line and flying upside down, but without the thrill of the free-gliding Fox glider. Having said that, it did manage 14 rolls on tow, equalling a record set earlier in the year. The accompanying Piper Pawnee keeps something in front of the crowds whilst the glider goes around, but hardly compares with the likes of Will Curtis, who had been to Airbourne several times, the Matadors or Mark Jeffries. Good for Eastbourne for trying something new - we encourage that - but not many people will be worried whether this team comes back next time. Brendan O'Brien We were disappointed with last year's commentary from Airsound, provided from a cabin away from flight-centre. This year the commentary was again provided from a pod on the promenade, but the team of Brendan O'Brien and George 'Smokey' Bacon was much more confident, lively, enthusiastic and entertaining. Regular show-goers must wonder how Brendan can be so surprised every time the Guinot girls dismount at the end of the display, but he plays it well, every time! Other teams brought their own commentators, including the Red Arrows, the Wingwalkers, the Blades and Chris 'Omelet' ('Bouncer' in Dutch) Vaneker for the RNAF F16. There was also a change for 2009 to the arrangements for the show programme. Spitfire over Eastbourne The usual £5 booklet with provisional display times was replaced by a £3 advert-laden booklet of similar size. It had times for the displays of the Red Arrows but only indications of the likely participants (including some that didn't actually turn up), with no timings, for other displays. Instead, vouchers in the programme could be exchanged at an information desk for a flight timetable for that day. RNAF F16 The old-style programmed timings were always unreliable, but most people found them helpful even if they had to be amended when the local radio station announced changes. This year's daily listings were not infallible, but much more dependable. However, the show can be viewed from a massive area from Beachy Head on the west to the Sovereign Harbour on the east. As far as we could see there was only one pick-up point for the daily lists - near the arena. From the harbour to Beachy Head visitors had to listen to the radio to learn about the flying details and could not even know the time flying was due to start or finish on any day. A better compromise might be a programme in the style of 2008 and earlier years, with best possible indications of the participating aircraft and order of appearance and flying start and finish times, accepting that the early publication date will result in some unavoidable changes. A more widely available daily update would be a bonus. Although the lack of a major sponsor, and thus of funding, is a recurring threat to the event, and despite an inevitable local anti-airshow lobby, there is an overwhelming support in the town to retain Airbourne and the title 'biggest free airshow in the world'. However to retain that accolade against determined competition, not least from other seaside towns such as Bournemouth, Eastbourne needs to see what it can do to pull in not only the cash but also airshow enthusiasts. Gnats during the evening display A new evening experiment worked very well and will certainly help if repeated. Battle of Britain Memorial Flight On Friday from about 6.15pm until 8ish, the crowds were entertained by the Typhoon, a pair of Gnats, the Spitfire, Hurri Bomber and Blades aerobatic team. There is something emotive about display flying as dusk approaches. On a broad blue stage the descendent sun provided excellent spotlighting for some stunning performances. Let's hope this is an experiment that is repeated and that the weather is as kind next time. It would be good to see a little more variety in the Airbourne line-up, including some of the major crowd-pullers. Airbourne wouldn't be the same without the BBMF - local people reminisce and applaud - and the RAF line-up is probably a constant because of the heavy involvement of the RAF in the day as a whole. Most family shows will expect the wingwalkers. But with that platform, it would be good to see Eastbourne expanding on their already good reputation for innovation. Perhaps a themed show, with a massed warbird showing or some replicas from The Great War Display Team. The Vulcan, too, may be expensive, but if neighbouring shows invest in such attractions and it draws the enthusiasts, this may well be at the expense of long-standing venues such as Eastbourne if they don't book it too. These thoughts are not criticism but possible ways of improving what is already a tremendous free family show and one that deserves the continuing support of local businesses and authorities. Jag spins after the chicane during a race Click for more photos of Revival 2009 For airshow enthusiasts, the event is best described as a 'Wings and Wheels' but to leave it at that would understate the variety of events throughout its three days. First ever public appearance by Mr Bean The major non-air event is classic motor racing, which starts at about 10am and finishes near dusk from Friday until Sunday. Friday's road events are official practice to select runners and grid positions, and the entry price to the grounds is lower to reflect the relatively reduced interest, but both of the weekend days are filled with finals - no fewer than 15 championships over the weekend as well as parades. The extensive grounds are dotted with period displays including the inevitable Dad's Army but also police, the AA and others, all in uniform and with vehicles and other effects from the era. There are three music stands with a wide variety of music from the period, including rock, jazz, swing and wartime ballads and old style car show, with showroom condition classic cars complete with models - the way motor shows used to be. There is also plenty of catering and shopping around the track and in the central area and a free tractor ride to save you walking to the further points. Messerschmitt 109 To qualify, everything at Revival has to date before 1966. All vehicles, all aircraft - even visitors are encouraged to attend in period dress. And the majority do. This adds hugely to the festival atmosphere as do the little things. The catering and other staff dressed in period; the 'spy' wondering around the grounds with dark glasses and peering from behind a newspaper; the old couple and their pram, filled with their worldly possessions and clearly escaping the enemy or fleeing their bombed house. Two Mustangs and two Spitfires The air theme is, also, pre-1966, so there are no Red Arrows, Typhoon etc. However, the were a pair of Mustangs, a pair of Spitfires, and the BBMF trio including the Lancaster. A Messerschmitt joined in for the weekend and Goodwood's own Harvard was on view most of the time and flew occasionally. One of the highlights, as in many shows this year, was a display on both of the weekend days by the Vulcan. The other was the final public display by Goodwood's Vickers Vimy replica, before it goes on permanent display at the Brooklands museum. The final public display flight of the Vimy The air displays started quite early. The first were before 9am each day. However, they were well spread and several were late in the afternoon. The weather was fair, bearing in mind that it was mid September, but it did get rather gloomy by the end of each afternoon. Dusk air displays work well earlier in the year, because the aircraft are well lit in the setting sun. However, in September it works much less well. Although the flying itself was as excellent as ever from some of the best airshow pilots, the spectacle later in the day was rather colourless. The Vulcan flew on Saturday and Sunday It is evident that motor racing has first priority throughout the event. As the BBMF banked around the airfield the commentator was keen to let us know who was flying the craft so expertly, but the public address system was given over to a description of the mini - not even a race, just a eulogy that could surely have waited a few minutes. Even the Vulcan arrived unannounced and only a very brief commentary was allowed to interrupt the description of road racing. Frustrating for the airshow enthusiast but an example of how packed the days can be, with occasional action in the air and near constant action on the track. The flying is more or less the same each day, but if you are coming on just one day, it is usually best to choose Sunday to reduce the risk of missing anything. No need to keep away from the aircraft on static display The Goodwood estate is owned by the Earl of March. His grandfather, a previous owner of the estate, was Freddie March, who flew aircraft he had designed himself. The static aircraft park is named, in his honour, the Freddie March Spirit of Aviation. As with the rest of the event, only pre-1966 aircraft are displayed. At most airshows with static aircraft parks, there is a fence that keeps viewing at a distance. At Goodwood the public can get up close and personal with the craft. There are 'wardens' to make sure nothing silly goes on, but within reason you can get right up to, touch, closely inspect and occasionally, when an owner or guardian attends, sit in the cockpit. Around 20 classic aircraft were on display including British, American, German and even a Chinese example - the 1966 Nanchang CJ-6A. Buzz Aldrin, James May and Chris Rea, judges During the weekend a panel of distinguished judges decides which of the craft is best presented. The winner in 2009 was a Bucker BU133 Jungemeister. As well as the static air park and air displays, air trips in a Dove or a Dragon Rapide could be taken as well as trial lessons in a Tiger Moth. Lee Proudfoot (top) and Charlie Brown prepare for take-off in easy view of the crowds. Many of the display aircraft including the Messerschmitt, two Mustangs and Spitfires as well as the Harvard were also on display in a separate area, some of them just 3 metres from the crowd line. You have to be a member of Goodwood's aero club to get any closer to them but it was easy for all visitors to catch the draft from the props, to see the craft prepared, fired up and taxi to the airstrip at much closer quarters than you expect at most traditional airshows. Although Revival's focus is on motor racing, air displays and a static aircraft park come in a fair second place. There is not the variety or volume of air activity as some 'Wings and Wheels' events, but there is usually something unique that makes a visit well worthwhile. And if you like motor thrills as well, then there is really no other place that compares to Revival. At the time, in 2004, Southend claimed their Bank Holiday show was "Europe's largest free airshow". Free it may have been. The largest it was not. Nevertheless, the two day Bank Holiday show provided a fair variety, with one or two treats most years, although the rest could be a bit sameish. Sea Vixen T-33A Shooting Star The treats in 2004 were the Sea Vixen, resplendent in its controversial, but jolly, Red Bull livery, and the Catalina, making its UK debut after a trek from Canada. Unfortunately, the low tide prevented a sea landing but the Catalina did spend a lot of time pleasuring the crowds. You can tell when an aircraft catches the imagination of the public. Usually, most younger folk at family shows such as this carry on inspecting their tombola tickets for the elusive odd number as our flying heritage roars past. Occasionally even the teenies look up, usually to follow the Falcons on their descent or the always-spectacular Red Arrows. The circling Catalina from the Plane Sailing Consortium presented such a distraction for Southend's visitors. Catalina Utterly Butterly Wingwalkers Other delights included the T-33A Shooting Star (or Silver Star as it is known in Canada) in it's silver and dayglow orange livery, and the Utterlys performing as a foursome instead of the more common pairing. The Red Arrows closed the weekend with their infallible display of aerial balletics and synchronised flying. This was the first public display of their 40th season and introduced new formations to the admiring public. It had to be the last display of the weekend. Who could follow that? Most noticeable to the crowds was a puff of smoke from the BBMF Spitfire during its display on Sunday, followed by a hazy trail as it performed its final pass. This developed into a stream of smoke that caused the BBMF to abandon their display and hurry back to Southend airport. The Spitfire engine was found to have lost most of its oil and needed a complete rebuild: the Hurricane's radiator failed after the landing and the Lancaster also had a minor problem to one of its engines. Thankfully, the Lanc was back in the air for Monday when it performed a lone display in the absence of its mates. Other mishaps were a serious fault with a Navy Lynx, which caused the Black Cats to display as a solo Black Cat, a fault with the American MH-53, which had to cancel its Sunday appearance, and a landing incident after the Hunter's Sunday outing which needed a quick repair at Southend and further attention later on. The B-17 is not owned by the museum but by a charity, called the B-17 Charitable Trust, supported by volunteers and a Supporters Club with over 6,000 members. Short history Sally B never saw war service. She was one of the last B-17s to be constructed and didn't join the fleet of the US Army Air Force until June 1945. Inside Sally B Sally B was built in standard configuration for active service but was soon converted for use as a trainer, then for research, returning to standard configuration, but without armaments, in 1954. From November of that year it had a French registration and was based in France working on survey and mapping for the French government, and others, until the 1970s. In 1975 Ted White, a businessman and pilot, brought Sally B via Biggin Hill to the Imperial War Museum in Duxford. It was Ted who named her Sally B after his companion, Elly Sallingboe. Sally B first flew in an air display at Biggin Hill in the same year, as the USAAF World War Two Memorial Flight. Sally B was kept in flying condition by an engineering support group and volunteers from the newly formed Duxford Aviation Society and, from 1980, the Sally B Supporters Club. She was painted in the 457th Bomb Group, USAAF 8th Air Force, keeping her original serial number 485784. In 1982 Ted was killed when his T-6 Harvard, G-ELLY, crashed in Malta. In his memory, Sally B's starboard inner engine cowling carries the same black and yellow chequered markings as his Harvard. More photos There are other photos of Sally B in the photos section B-17 Charitable Trust In 1998 Sally B suffered a series of engine problems pinning her down in Guernsey for nine months. With a lot of commercial and volunteer support, the engine was replaced and she returned to Duxford in April 1999. Because there were no funds left to continue to fly and maintain Sally B, the B-17 Charitable Trust was formed in March 2000 to enable access to greater funding. The Trust received a grant of £20,000 from the Imperial War Museum Duxford, where Sally B is the flagship of the American Air Museum in Britain, part of the Imperial War Museum complex. Patron of the Trust is Air Chief Marshal Sir John Allison. The Trustees are Elly Sallingboe, Edward (Ted) Inman (former Director of the Imperial War Museum Duxford), Laurence Chandler (Ted White's accountant) and Derek Smith (head of the Sales Team). On screen Sally B enjoyed her first TV role in 1981 as B-17 'Ginger Rogers' in London Weekend Television’s 'We’ll Meet Again'. In 1989 she starred with four other B-17s in the film 'Memphis Belle' and is the plane shown coming home from the final mission. As well as airshows in the UK and in Europe, she has also performed at the D-Day commemorations in 1994, the VE-Day flypast over the City of London in 1995 and, most years, led the Memorial Day commemorative flypast over the American Military Cemetery at Madingley in Cambridgeshire. Many would say that the Hawker Hurricane played a more important role in the Battle of Britain itself, but few would deny the Spitfire its other accolades: innovative design, production quantities and longevity. More Spitfires were produced than any other fighter on the allied side and it was the only allied aircraft that remained in production before, throughout and after the war. In brief Manufacturer: Supermarine Designer: R J Mitchell 1st flight: 8th March 1938 Production: 1938-1948 Number built: 20,351 Left RAF service June 1957 The Spitfire was designed by R. J. Mitchell. At the time, Mitchell was the chief designer at Supermarine Aviation Works, a subsidiary of Vickers-Armstrong. After the Spitfire's first flight in 1936, but before main production began in 1938, Joseph Smith took over main responsibility for design when Mitchell died of cancer in 1937. The most striking design feature is the elliptical wing with a thin cross section which, together with the liquid-cooled V12 Rolls Royce 'Merlin' engine in a small, streamlined frame, helped the Spitfire to outperform its contemporaries. Later models, from Mark XII, took the more powerful Rolls Royce Griffon engine. The vast majority of Spitfires were single seat. There were various conversions to allow a second seat. The one illustrated below is a two-seat trainer, firing up for a display at Biggin Hill. Other variants were the naval 'Seafire', initially adapted from Spitfires but later as a purpose-built Seafire F/FR Mk 47, with folding wings and other adaptations to make it more suitable for use from carriers, and high-speed photo-reconnaissance craft with extended range. First Spitfires were armed with eight Browning 7.7mm (0.303") machine guns but later models substituted four of the Brownings for two 20 mm (0.787") Hispano Mk II cannon. They could also carry two 250 lb (113 kg) bombs. Unfortunately, the first casualties of the Spitfire in action were a pair of Hurricanes that were shot down in a 'friendly fire' incident over the Medway in September 1939. It's first enemy victim was a Junker 88s, shot down on 16th October 1939 over over the Firth of Forth in Scotland. One of the most famous Spitfires is the Old Flying Machine Company's MkIXb MH434, traditionally flown by the renowned Ray Hanna, former Red Arrows leader and display pilot, until his death in late 2005. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) has five Spitfires, including MkIIa P7350, the only surviving Spitfire that actually flew in the Battle of Britain, and PR MkXIX PM631 high altitude reconnaissance aircraft, which entered service just after the end of the war. There are about 40 more airworthy Spitfires, most in the UK, but with further examples worldwide, and many static Spitfires in museum display condition. Ray Hanna Caroline Grace Charlie Brown The number of planes scrambled varies between shows. At Biggin Hill in 2004, eight Spitfires and two Hurricanes took to the air. After a promising start on Saturday, the clouds closed in and rain followed, reducing visibility and curtailing what had promised to be a novel afternoon programme. Sunday also started bright and became gloomier but at least the programme was not hit. Every airshow has its highlights, but at Biggin Hill it was hard to choose just one. The rarity highlight had to be the appearance of the Dornier Do24. Royal Netherlands Air Force F16 Always sure to thrill, the F16 was represented by this Dutch example and another from the Belgian Air Force. A non-maritime highlight was the Army Air Corps Historic Aircraft flight who combined with the Blue Eagles to impress the crowds with eight rotary and three fixed wing aircraft in procession, followed by displays in groups. The only AAC rotary missing from the procession was the Skeeter, which could, however, been seen in the static display until it left on Sunday morning. The AAC Historic Flight with the Blue Eagles also clearly impressed the judges, who gave them the award for top team performance. Eastbourne Goodwood Southend Airbourne - Eastbourne International Airshow 2007 Reviews of other Eastbourne shows Airbourne 2005 Airbourne 2004 Eastbourne has a reputation for innovation. In past years the B1 bomber has made a rare appearance and in 2005 Eastbourne was the venue for the first outing of the Eurofighter at a family show. In 2007, Eastbourne scooped the only family show appearance for the Royal Jordanian Falcons, conducting a European tour during which the only other British showing in 2007 was at the Royal International Tattoo at Fairford, a military airshow. Other unusual additions to Airbourne's display in 2007 were two craft from the US, the MH-53 heavy-lift helicopter and the MC-130 which demonstrated in-flight refueling on Friday. Messerschmitt on Saturday Royal Jordanian Falcons at Airbourne 2007 The Messerschmitt ME-108 also made a rare Eastbourne appearance. Two were programmed to be in a dogfight with two Hurricanes on Saturday and Sunday. In practice, on Sunday the Hurricanes displayed separately and only one Messerschmitt made it for a display later in the afternoon. On Saturday it was more of an aerial procession than a dogfight. Nevertheless it was good to see all four aircraft in the skies at the same time. 747 'Jumbo' jet A DHL cargo 747 displayed at Airbourne in 2005. In 2007 a passenger 747-400 from Oasis Hong Kong made several passes on Saturday. As well as these innovations, the 800,000 crowd enjoyed the more traditional teams. Red Arrows flew a shortened flat programme on Saturday The Red Arrows, always amongst the most popular crowd pleasers at Airbourne, displayed on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday their programme was interrupted when a possible intruder was spotted and the display was curtailed when the weather closed in. Red Arrows on Sunday Although the sun didn't shine to bring out the bright red of the Arrows, the murky cloud showed off the coloured smoke trails. On Sunday the team performed a full rolling display despite the weather. Airbourne has a focus on recruitment for the RAF and there is invariably a demonstration by the sequence of aircraft recruits would expect to experience in their training and service careers. At Airbourne 2007 this range was represented by the trainers, the Grob 115e (known as the Tutor T1), the Tucano T1 and the Hawk T1 advanced trainer. From Friday to Sunday the newest aircraft, and the target of all that training, the Eurofighter Typhoon, showed how the effort is all worthwhile, accompanied by an enthusiastic commentary from Team Manager, Flight Lieutenant James Bolton. Blades in 4 Extra 300s Lighter aircraft were represented by the Extra, which featured in a solo display by John Taylor from Ultimate High and formation displays by the Royal Jordanian Falcons and the Blades, and the king of the aerobatics, Will Curtis performing his amazing display in a Sukhoi Su-26. Will Curtis in his Sukhoi 26 Will, the holder of the Guinness Book of Records for flying upside down between twelve sets of poles just one metre above the ground, hovers the Sukhoi like helicopter, flicks, loops and tumbles like a falling sycamore seed. The plane has been further modified and in 2007 sported with a 9 cylinder 525hp radial engine and massive specially designed 2.7metre diameter propeller. With two propellers, four arms and four legs, the Stearman Wingwalker pair have dropped their blue and yellow for the livery of new sponsors, Guinot. Guinot wingwalkers at Airbourne 2007 As well as the Blue Eagles, displaying in their Lynx and four Gazelles, rotaries included the USAF MH-53, which displayed on Friday, and the Belgian Air Force Sea King, which simulated a rescue on the last three of their scheduled four days. The Chinook, a regular at Eastbourne, flew Friday-Sunday. Curtiss P40M "Kitty Hawk" Curtiss P51 "Mustang" Spitfire and Hurricane of the BBMF Mk IX Spitfire Wartime planes were well represented with a novel (for Eastbourne) appearance by the Kitty Hawk and the welcome return of the Mustang to support the more traditional displays of the Hurricanes and Spitfires, including the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Army Tiger John Romain wanted to make sure that everyone got a close look at the Mk IX Spitfire, bringing it very close to the crowd on Thursday but flying a more normal line on the other show days. The RAF Falcons jumped on two of the scheduled four days, but not without incident (see box), whereas the smaller army Tigers team also managed a jump onto the beach on Thursday. Falcons at Airbourne 2007 The Falcons are a regular attraction at Airbourne, descending to the arena most days of the event. The Falcon Stack on Friday The team usually jump from a Hercules, but deployment on active service and technical problems with the reserve led to the Dakota from the BBMF standing in as a would-be jump platform on Thursday. Dakota, intended Falcon Jump platform for Thursday However, when the decision was taken at the last minute that it was too gusty to be safe, the Dakota performed its display with the Falcons still on board. The Hercules was back in its normal role on Friday onwards. Gusts were probably also to blame for one Falcon missing the target - and the arena - on Friday, but everyone landed without injury. Landing in the arena It was again too gusty to drop on Saturday, but on Sunday the still conditions did permit a jump from 8000ft. The commentator warned that the descent would be fast, but it turned out to be faster than perhaps even he had foreseen. Coming to land at Airbourne 2007 Only one of the Falcons landed on his feet, most of the others managing a skid to a sitting stop. One other landed outside the arena and, most regrettably, two had an even harder landing within the arena and were injured. Sgt Rich Cross immediately after Friday's landing. Thankfully, one returned to his feet after a few minutes, to the relief and applause of the crowds, but the other, Sgt Rich Cross, was taken to hospital with serious injuries to his face and many bones between his feet and his pelvis and broken arms. We wish Sgt Cross a speedy and full recovery. There are links to reviews of other shows, including more recent Eastbourne airshows, in the box on the right. It was lucky 13 for visitors to the 13th Airbourne. Always a spectacular family show, this year's Airbourne provided something special with two firsts. B1-B Airbourne was the first outing at a family airshow of the American B1. The long-range bomber from Air Force Base Dyess in Texas made three passes each day on all four days of the show. The other first was an outing for the Typhoon in its first year on the display circuit. Typhoon Other unusual additions to Airbourne's display list were an American KC-135 "Stratotanker" in-flight refueller, based on the Boeing 707, and a Boeing 757 freighter in DHL livery. Boeing 757 As well as these innovations, the 800,000 crowd enjoyed the more traditional displays. The Red Arrows are always amongst the most popular displays at Airbourne. In 2004, one of the displays had to be cancelled because of the weather and the other two had to be curtailed. No such misfortune this year. Red Arrows on Friday The display on Sunday was delayed slightly when the Arrows had to hold off just seconds before commencing their display, because word arrived that the Air Ambulance may be launched. In the event the medical emergency was dealt with by road. Despite having to hold off, the Arrows were able to perform a full display on this and their other two days. The Red Arrows came to the arena on Saturday Following their display on Saturday the pilots made a slow fly past in a Merlin and landed at a nearby college, arriving shortly afterwards by road to meet some of their fans and sign autographs in the arena. The Reds were inundated by fans seeking autographs on Saturday Belgian F16 The F16 Fighting Falcon from the Belgian Air Force displayed each day, although its counterpart from the Royal Netherlands Air Force was one of the very few 'no-shows'. The only others expected at Airbourne 2005 who did not make it at all were the Matadors, who fly a pair of Sukhoi 26 aerobatic aircraft. The weather also prevented the Falcons jumping on Saturday, but they were able to complete their drops on the other three days of the show. Most of the consequent gaps in the displays were filled by a pair of Yaks and the addition of an extra sortie from John Romain in the Aircraft Restoration Company's Mark XIV Spitfire. Spitfire Mk XIV Airbourne has a focus on recruitment for the RAF and there is invariably a demonstration by the sequence of aircraft recruits would expect to experience in their training and service careers. Hawk trainer Harrier GR7 At Airbourne 2005 this full range was represented by the basic trainers, the Grob 115e (known as the Tutor) and the Tucano T1; the Hawk T1 advanced trainer and craft that provide front line service, the Jaguar GR3, the Tornado F3 and, always a hit at Airbourne and other shows, the Harrier GR7, with its variety of fast manoeuvres, slow flypasts, hover and the famous bow. Patrouille Reva Lighter aircraft were represented by the Yaks, who filled the gap in the programme left by the non-appearance of the Matadors; Denny Dobson flying his Extra 300XS, two wingwalkers aboard Utterly Buttery Boeing Stearman biplanes and a pair of Patrouille Revas. Will Curtis But king of the aerobatics had to be Will Curtis performing his amazing display in a Sukhoi Su-26. Will, the holder of the Guinness Book of Records for flying upside down between twelve sets of poles just one metre above the ground, hovers the Sukhoi like helicopter, flicks, loops and tumbles like a falling sycamore seed. The plane has been specially modified with a 9 cylinder 460hp radial engine and massive specially designed propeller. During the display, Will broadcast live from the cockpit; his calm chatter with Peter McNamara, the commentator, being relayed over the public address system and Radio Airbourne. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Lancaster, Hurricane and Spitfire are usually on the programme for Airbourne, but frequently at least one of the craft is unable to make it, usually for technical reasons. Battle of Britain Memorial Flight This year the full trio displayed on Thursday and Friday, although the flight had other commitments on both days of the weekend. Lancaster Rotaries were well represented at Airbourne. As well as the Blue Eagles, displaying in their Lynx and four Gazelles, and the Squirrel that brought Red 10, the Merlin made an appearance on three days. Merlin Chinook The Chinook is a regular at Eastbourne and flew on all four days but, unusually for Airbourne, the display did not include the enactment of a rescue, troop landing or other exercise. Falcons at Airbourne 2005 The Falcons are a regular attraction at Airbourne, descending to the arena most days of the event. In 2005 the Falcons were due to drop on all four days. In practice, the weather closed in too much on Saturday, but jumps were completed on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Sgt Dave Newton on his reserve chute and after the descent Jumps are always spectacular, but on Friday there was added tension when, due to a line fault, the main chute of Sgt Dave Newton failed to open. He deployed his reserve parachute and arrived safely in the arena just ahead of his colleagues. The Falcons jump from a height of between 2,200 and 12,000 feet, depending on the conditions. Falling at about 120 mph in freefall, they can control their speed as well as direction by altering their body and limb positions. The Falcons heart If the jump begins at a sufficiently high altitude, this enables the team to form their heart, and their stack before landing, invariably on target, in the arena. FS Andy Wright FS Andy Wright Sgt Jon Conner arrives in the arena The team use a 30 Sq Metre 'Ram Air' square parachute and also carry the smoke canisters tied to their boots. Falcons are usually members of the team for three years, during which they will complete about 1,000 jumps in displays and on training. Smoke Canisters Following their arrival in the arena, the team take the salute as their Hercules "jump platform" performs a flypast. There are links to reviews of other shows, including more recent Eastbourne airshows, in the box on the right. The weather was not kind to Airbourne this year. Thursday started a bit overcast and, with the exception of some sunny breaks on Saturday, the weekend stayed a bit dull, culminating in a downpour on Sunday that curtailed the flying programme. This may have been more serious for weaker shows, but Airbourne is big enough to rise above weather issues and to provide an excellent show regardless. With the Red Arrows billed to appear three times, a very strong contingent of contemporary British, Belgian and Dutch military aircraft, a smidgeon from the USA and a pick from the private sector, there was plenty to draw the crowds on all four days. Two RAF helicopter teams demonstrated their skills in role plays that mirrored their day jobs. Puma - job done Their Puma HC1 chased a speedboat and captured the 'drug smugglers' and a Chinook HC2 from Odiham lowered a crewman onto a dinghy and later recovered him from the local lifeboat. The Chinook crew were not a special demonstration team, but as co-pilot Hannah Brown told britishairshows before Thursday's demonstration - 'It's no problem - it's what we do all the time'. Chinook HC2 over Eastbourne pier Still with the helicopters, the Army Air Corps Blue Eagles thrilled with their flips, loops and synchronised display flying a Lynx and four Gazelles. Eastbourne's Grand Hotel under no threat from the Blue Eagles Lynx The F16 Fighting Falcons from the Belgian and Dutch air forces never fail to impress - the Dutch one turning most heads, mainly due to its chevron colour scheme rather than any marked difference in the displays. Royal Netherlands Air Force F16 UK's largest civilian display team, the Aerostars, flew a very impressive aerobatic display in their 6 Yak 50 / 52 craft. The timing of their Saturday display was particularly fortunate as the scarce sun provided a spotlight for their rainbow of colours. After a couple of no-shows because of a technical hitch, Peter Metcalfe brought along his Pitts Special for the weekend. Props were also represented by Will Curtis performing his amazing aerobatics in a Sukhoi Su-26, Denny Dobson in his Extra 300XS and a pair of Boeing Stearman biplanes with Utterly Butterly wingwalkers aloft. Utterly Butterlys fly in all weathers Ukairshows asked Butterly Marie Duguid whether there were any conditions in which the Butterlys would not fly. Not many, she said, as she waited at Shoreham for take-off. As long as there is enough visibility they fly. The cold and rain do not stop them. Sometimes it gets extra bumpy but that's all part of the fun. Well done them! Also appearing at Airbourne 2004 Falcons (RAF parachute team} Tutor (RAF basic trainer) Tucano T1 (RAF trainer) Hawk T1 (RAF Advanced trainer) Gnat (solo!) Jaguar (RAF) Fouga Magister (Belgian AF) PC7 (Dutch AF trainer) Nimrod MR2 (RAF) Hercules (Salute from Falcons) Spitfire Mk XVI (John Romain) Tornado GR4 (RAF) Harrier GR7 Squirrel helicopter (bringing Red 10) Red Arrows at Airbourne 2004 The Red Arrows displays provided some of the highlights but also some of the disappointments at Airbourne 2004. On Friday, the Arrows completed the first part of their display but atrocious visibility caused Red 1 to call off the second part for safety reasons. Red Arrows in the mist at Airbourne 2004 Conditions were fine on Saturday and the display would have been complete but for a stray Cirrus CR22 light aircraft. The pilot must have thought he was Red 6 flying an opposition pass and headed east along the coast straight through the Arrows' display line. The Red Arrows had to clear to safety whilst the rogue aircraft dawdled off. Although the Arrows did return for another part of the display, they had to abort before the end because holding off had cost too much fuel to enable them to complete. Red Arrows on Saturday The Sunday display should have been the highlight. The Arrows were due to arrive with a Gnat in Red Arrows livery as part of their 40th anniversary celebrations. However, the cloud base gradually lowered during the afternoon until even the top of Beachy Head was cloaked. Red 10 had arrived and everyone was ready. The Nimrod diverted from its display to check the weather but advised there was no likelihood of improvement - no chance of a display in those conditions. Red Arrows leave in a Merlin An alternative treat from the Red Arrows was their arrival in the arena aboard a Merlin for photos, interviews and autographs at various points amongst the ground displays. Thankfully, this was timed for Saturday when the weather did not interfere.
