Southend Airshow & Military Festival

Show's FacebookShow's Twitter feed
There will be no airshow in Southend in 2015. The organisers blame high local authority costs. They are looking for an alternative venue.

After cancellation of the airshow in 2013 the Southend Air Festival was to have become the Southend Airshow and Military Festival in 2014, but because of a funding shortfall the relaunch was postponed. After a massive fundraising effort the organisers have confirmed that this year the airshow is back, as part of the inaugural Southend Airshow and Military Festival, with a target crowd of 500,000.

Battle of Britain Anniversary Air Show Duxford's late summer air show this year commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.  It honours the role in the Battle of Britain of RAF Duxford: the home of the first squadron to fly Spitfires and also of some of the RAF’s best-known fighter pilots, including Douglas Bader. It also honours the men and women who looked after the aircraft on the ground.
You can usually expect a few contemporary jets but the focus will normally be on historic warbirds and military and civilian aircraft and rare combinations.
Expect gates to open be open from 8am to 6pm and flying from about 2pm until 5.30pm.

The official line is that "without considerable public support and business funding the show is unlikely to return". This does leave the door open is support is forthcoming, but the 2014 show organisers, Open Air Productions, have called in the liquidators leaving local businesses unpaid. Despite Shepway Council's optimism in a statement in June 2014 and a further report in December 2014 about working with an alternative organiser on a small show, it has to go down as a 'possible' rather than 'probable'.
